A Google Play code can be one of two things. A gift card adds money to your Play balance. A promo code comes from an app's developer and gives you one app, one item or a free trial. You redeem them in mostly the same places, but they do different things.
Promo code or gift card?
| Gift card or gift code | Promo code from a developer | |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues it | Google, sold in shops or sent by email | The app's developer, created in Play Console |
| What you get | Money in your Google Play balance | One paid app, one in-app item, or a free subscription trial |
| What it looks like | Usually 16 letters and numbers | A code the developer sends you, or a link starting with play.google.com/redeem |
| Where it works | Anywhere on Google Play, in the country where it was bought | Only for that one app |
| After you redeem | Spend the balance on anything on Google Play | The app or item is yours; a free trial renews at full price unless you cancel |
Google also runs promotions that add promotional credit to your account. Those codes work like a gift card, but they expire when the promotion ends.
Redeem on your phone
On Android you redeem in the Google Play app. The same idea exists on iPhone, but Google Play codes don't work in Apple's App Store. If you have an iPhone, you need an App Store code instead. Both are shown here so you can check you're using the right store.
Android
- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Redeem code (some Google pages call it Redeem gift code).
- Type the code, or scan a physical gift card.
- Tap Redeem, check which Google account gets it, then tap Confirm.
iPhone and iPad
For App Store codes only.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your photo or initials at the top.
- Tap Redeem Code.
- Tap Use Camera, or Enter Code Manually.
- Tap Redeem.
Check the account before you tap Confirm. If you use more than one Google account on the phone, the code goes to the one shown. Google's help pages offer no way to move it afterwards.
Redeem on a computer
- Go to play.google.com/redeem and sign in with the Google account you use on your phone.
- Enter the code.
- Click Redeem.
- Check which account will receive it.
- Click Confirm.
A paid app redeemed on the web belongs to your Google account, so you can install it from Google Play on any Android phone signed in to that account.
Redeem inside an app or at checkout
Some codes only work inside the app they belong to. Google's error message says so: "If the code is for a specific app, redeem it in that app." Custom subscription codes are the main case. A developer can create a code like SPRING2026 that many people can use, and Google only lets you enter that kind of code in the app.
- Open the app and start buying the item or subscription the code is for.
- When Google Play's payment screen appears, tap the down arrow next to your payment method.
- Tap Redeem code.
- Enter the code and follow the steps on screen.
If the price on the confirmation screen doesn't drop to free (or show the free trial), the code wasn't applied. Stop there and check the code again before you confirm.
Redeem from a link
Some developers send a link instead of a bare code. Google's format is https://play.google.com/redeem?code= followed by the code. Tapping it opens Google Play with the code filled in. After you tap Redeem, Google Play asks you to open the app, or to install or update it first.
Before you tap, look at the address. A real redeem link goes to play.google.com. A link to any other site that asks for your Google password is not a Google Play code.
What happens after you redeem a promo code
- A paid app becomes yours on that Google account, the same as if you had bought it.
- An in-app item is added to your account. Open the app to see it.
- A subscription code gives a free trial, not a free subscription. You still subscribe with a payment method, and the plan renews at full price when the trial ends unless you cancel.
Error messages and how to fix them
These are the messages Google lists on its troubleshooting page, with Google's own fixes. First, type the code again without spaces or dashes.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| There is a problem with that code. Try a different one or learn more. | Scan the card again or type the code without spaces or dashes. A gift card may not be activated yet: ask the shop that sold it. |
| The code you entered has already been redeemed on a different account | Check which Google account you are signed in to, and whether someone else in your home used it. Google won't say which account redeemed it. |
| The code you entered has expired. | The promotion has ended or the code has expired. Google won't accept it after the end date. Ask the developer whether they have another. |
| That code didn't work. Try again. If the code is for a specific app, redeem it in that app. | Open the app the code is for and redeem it at checkout. If that fails, contact the developer who sent it. |
| Couldn't redeem this code. This code can only be used in [country/region]. | Codes are tied to a country. Redeem it in the country it was bought or offered in, or update your Google Play country if you have moved. |
| You have reached your redemption limit. | This is a limit on gift card balance. Spend some balance, wait 24 hours and try again. |
| Code is inactive and has been cancelled. | Contact the shop where the card was bought. |
If a message tells you to send details or verify your identity, follow the link in the message itself. Google's page says to contact Google Play support if you think an error is wrong.
Codes that are not what they claim
Google's scam page says: "If anyone asks you for a code, it could be a scam." Google Play gift cards can only be used on Google Play. They can't pay a bill, a fine or a person. Websites and videos that promise free Google Play codes are a related trap. The guide to Google Play promo codes explains which free codes are real and how to tell.
If you have an iPhone
Codes don't cross stores. A Google Play code won't work in the App Store, and an App Store code won't work on Google Play. A developer giving away an app on both stores has to create a separate code in each one. The iPhone steps, including offer codes and Apple's error messages, are in how to redeem a code on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Questions people ask
Can I use a Google Play code in another country?
Usually not. Google says gift cards and promotions are tied to the country they were bought or offered in. If you are travelling, Google suggests trying again when you are home.
I redeemed a code on the wrong account. Can I move it?
Google's page does not offer a way to move a redeemed code. Contact Google Play support, but don't expect a transfer.
Do Google Play promo codes expire?
Yes. A developer's promotion runs until an end date they choose, at most one year after it starts. After that you'll see "The code you entered has expired."
How long is a Google Play code?
Gift codes are usually 16 letters and numbers. Developer promo codes and some digital codes can be shorter or longer.
